Welding Hazards Guide

May 8, 2025

 I. Common Welding Hazards

 1. Electrical Hazards

* Electric Shock: Especially in wet environments or when using damaged equipment.

* Electrostatic Discharge: May damage equipment or cause fire.

 2. High Temperature Hazards

* Burns: Caused by welding arcs or splattering molten metal.

* Fire Risk: High temperatures can ignite flammable materials nearby.

 3. Radiation Hazards (Arc Radiation)

* Ultraviolet and Infrared Radiation: Can lead to “arc eye” (welder’s flash) or skin burns.

* Intense Visible Light: May cause blurred vision or temporary blindness.

 4. Fume and Gas Hazards

* Metal Fumes: Vapors from zinc, chromium, nickel, etc., may cause poisoning.

* Toxic Gases: Such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide, harmful to the respiratory system.

 5. Noise Hazards

* High-frequency noise may cause hearing loss or permanent deafness.

 6. Mechanical and Operational Hazards

* Cuts, Crushing Injuries: Due to improper handling of welding tools or materials.

* Posture-Related Injuries: Long-term bending or overhead work can lead to muscular fatigue and injury.

 II. Protective Measures

 1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

* Welding helmet (preferably auto-darkening)

* Heat-resistant gloves, flame-retardant clothing, leg guards

* Respiratory protection (e.g., activated carbon mask or air-supplied respirator)

* Earplugs or earmuffs

* Non-slip insulated safety boots

 2. Workplace Environment Control

* Ensure good ventilation (natural or forced)

* Set up fireproof isolation zones; keep flammable materials away

* Install fume extraction or filtration devices

* Control workplace humidity to reduce shock risk

 3. Equipment and Process Safety

* Regular inspection of welding machines, cables, and grounding

* Use certified electrodes, wires, and shielding gases

* Avoid welding in confined spaces unless well-ventilated

* Disconnect power and gas before maintenance

III. First Aid and Emergency Response

 1. Burn Treatment

* Immediately rinse the burned area with cold water; do not apply ointments

* Use sterile dressings and seek medical attention promptly

 2. Fume Inhalation

* Move the person to fresh air immediately

* Ensure clear airway and assist breathing if necessary

* Seek medical help as soon as possible

3. Electric Shock

* Turn off the power before attempting rescue

* Ensure airway is open; perform CPR if needed

* Transport to hospital immediately

4. Eye Injury

* For “arc eye,” avoid bright light and rest eyes in darkness

* Apply a cold compress to the eyes; seek medical attention if severe

IV. Additional Recommendations

* Participate in regular welding safety training

* Conduct equipment checks before every job

* Establish and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)

* Wear safety harnesses when working at heights
