1. Laser Generation

The fiber laser cutter generates a high-intensity laser beam through fiber optics. This beam is created by using a seed laser that is amplified in a fiber medium. The wavelength of the laser is typically around 1 µm, making it suitable for cutting metals.

2. Focusing the Laser

The laser beam is directed and focused onto the metal tube using lenses or mirrors. The energy of the laser is concentrated on a small area of the tube, resulting in extremely high energy density.

3. Melting and Vaporizing the Metal

The focused laser beam heats the metal to its melting point or even vaporizes it. The high temperature allows the laser to cut through the metal tube by melting or sublimating the material along the cut path.

4. Assisting Gas

A jet of gas (usually oxygen, nitrogen, or compressed air) is blown through the cut area. This gas serves several purposes:

Clearing away molten metal: It helps blow away the molten material to create a clean cut.

Cooling the area: It cools down the surrounding material to prevent thermal distortion.

Enhancing cutting: In the case of oxygen, it reacts with the metal, aiding the cutting process through oxidation, which can increase the speed.

5. Precision Movement

The metal tube is held in place by a rotating chuck, and the laser head or the tube itself moves in multiple axes (X, Y, Z) to follow the programmed cutting path. The cutter can make complex shapes and cut at various angles.

6. Control System

A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) system controls the laser’s movement, ensuring that the laser follows the exact cutting pattern, creating highly precise cuts. The system can handle different tube diameters, thicknesses, and shapes.

7. Post-Cut Finish

After cutting, the edges of the tube may require minimal finishing, as fiber lasers produce smooth, clean cuts with minimal burrs or rough edges.

This process is highly efficient and commonly used in industries like automotive, aerospace, and metal fabrication due to its precision, speed, and versatility.
